News from Eckington Rotary Club

October 2011 - John Berrington

John Berrington visited us to decribe his experiences as a volunteer helping with polio immunisation in Delhi, as part of the "End Polio Now" campaign, Rotary International's campaign to eradicate the world of the polio virus which has crippled millions of children. The campaign, which has been running for 25 years, has a very high profile across the world, and is very close to eradicating polio for ever. Bill Gates has been a major contributor and supporter.

August 2011 - Sheffield Manor Lodge Visit

Wednesday 24th August saw the club and guests meet at Sheffield Manor Lodge for a look at some local history, including the story of one of Sheffield's most famous prisoners. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned at Sheffield Manor for 14 years.

Manor Lodge is run by volunteers and is open every Friday and by special arrangement for groups.  Details on their website: www.manorlodge.org.uk.

July 2011 - Strawberry Tea Party

Strawberries and cream, scones and jam (and more cream) helped the ladies of the club raise over £600 for Breast Cancer Care.  Amazingly, for an all day tea party, not a single jelly was hurled in anger!

July 2011 - Ridgeway Show

Our stand featured plants, books, games for young and old, and helped us raise almost £200 for local causes.

2011 Charter Dinner

Jake's Charter in more ways than one, this event included the surprise award of a Paul Harris Fellowship to Eckington & District Rotary Club Presdent Mike 'Jake' Jackson.  'Surprise' not because it was undeserved, it certainly was, but because Jake knew nothing about it before DG Val presented the award.  'Gobsmacked' was all he could say - tho  he soon recovered the power of speech and didn't lose it again for nearly 20 minutes!

The evening was nicely rounded off by speaker, Adrian Sumner, a Shelter Box Response Team member and ex RAF Vulcan pilot who had near misses with a Phantom jet and a New Zealand fjord, and once lost his plane in the mist while still on the air base!

Welcome. Now we want a good clean charter with no blue jokes and no kicking under the table.

October 2010 - Casino Night

An evening of boozin'and gamblin' at the Sitwell Arms proved such a great attraction (and money raiser) that we're going to do it again in 2011.
